It depends on the browser. In Chrome on Android, tap More and Download; on a computer, choose More > Cast, save, and share > Save page as.... In Safari, add the page to your Reading List and use Save Offline. On a computer, Chrome's reading list is for reading later, not offline.

The steps come from Google Chrome Help and Apple Support pages, read on October 6, 2026. Menu names can vary slightly by version and device language.

This guide is part of [A guide to saving articles and reading them later](</blog/saved-reading/guide-to-saving-articles-to-read-later>), which organizes every guide on the topic.

## How do I save an article offline in Chrome on Android?

According to [Chrome Help for Android](<https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/7343019?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid>):

1. Open the article in Chrome. You need to be online to save it.
2. To the right of the address bar, tap **More**, then **Download**.
3. To read it, tap **More** > **Downloads** and pick the page from the list.

From that list you can also delete or share the page by touching and holding it. The star saves the page to your reading list instead, which is a different thing: a place to come back to later.

## What about Chrome on a computer?

[Chrome Help for computers](<https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/7343019?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DDesktop>) separates two features:

- **To read later:** More > Bookmarks and lists > Reading list > **Add tab to reading list**.
- **To read offline:** More > Cast, save, and share > **Save page as...**, choose where to save it, then select **Save**. The file opens in your default browser, and you delete it by deleting the file.

## What about iPhone or iPad?

In Safari, according to [Apple's iPhone User Guide](<https://support.apple.com/guide/iphone/iph1a4721132/ios>), tap **Share**, then **Add to Reading List**. To keep every Reading List item available offline, go to **Settings** > **Apps** > **Safari** and turn on **Automatically Save Offline** (below Reading List); Apple says the items are saved to iCloud for offline reading.

In Chrome on iPhone and iPad, [Chrome Help](<https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/7343019?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DiOS>) says to tap **More** > **Add to Reading List** while you are online. When you are back online, the live version of the page loads.

## What about Safari on a Mac?

According to [Apple's Safari User Guide for Mac](<https://support.apple.com/guide/safari/sfri35905/mac>), add the page with **Add to Reading List**. To read it offline, Control-click its summary in the sidebar and choose **Save Offline**. To do this for every page, choose Safari > Settings > Advanced and select **Save articles for offline reading automatically**.

## What if I want a file that doesn't depend on the browser?

Save the article as a PDF. In Chrome, choose **File** > **Print** (Ctrl + P on Windows and Linux, ⌘ + P on Mac) and pick the destination, as shown in [Print from Chrome](<https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/1069693?hl=en>), where the **Save as PDF** option appears. On a Mac, Apple describes **File** > **Print** > **PDF** button > **Save as PDF** in [its guide](<https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/mchlp1531/mac>). For a version without ads, follow [Print an article without ads](</blog/reading-habits/print-article-without-ads>).

## Before you go offline: three checks

These checks are an original KeepAnalog suggestion, not steps from Google or Apple:

1. **Test in airplane mode** before you travel: open what you saved without a connection and confirm the text is complete.
2. **Keep the link too:** the original page can change or disappear, as covered in [When links disappear](</blog/process-and-care/when-links-disappear-reading-archive>).
3. **Pick a few:** saving is not reading; [Saving is not returning](</blog/saved-reading/saving-is-not-returning-saved-articles-unread>) suggests how to get back to what is pending, and if you came from Pocket, [Pocket shut down: where to save articles](</blog/saved-reading/pocket-shut-down-where-to-save-articles>) reviews alternatives.

## Screen or paper?

It depends on what you will do with the text; [Paper or screen by reading task](</blog/reading-habits/paper-or-screen-by-reading-task>) helps you decide. If you prefer paper, KeepAnalog takes eligible public links that one person chooses (HTML pages or PDFs) and turns them into a monthly printed issue. The preview shows each piece's title, byline when there is one, and source site, and nothing is printed or charged until the person approves the issue. For now, the pilot is in Argentina only, with no delivery in the United States.
